The ground floor of the Art Building houses a huge gallery room, capable of hosting a variety of shows. The lighting is perfect and the open space creates a great environment for receptions held at the opening of all new galleries. Also, the lobby is normally loaded with some snacks and refreshments during receptions as well. John Brown University has a wide variety of amazing artists in the upcoming gallery shows, and has hosted prominent shows such as Tim Ernst, the Talmud exhibit, and Makoto Fujimura. “WATERCOLORS from the Permanent Collection of the Arkansas Arts Center”
The AAC collection being featured range in date from the 1950s through the 1990s and shows the variety of directions artists have taken watercolor media through the years. This collection recognizes the talent of many emerging artists as well as the recognized masters of the watercolor media. Some of the artists included in the exhibit are Hugh Gumpel, Arnold Bittleman, Jon Carsman, Jane Culp, George Dombek, Ann Downs, Herman Maril, Louisa Matthiasdotttir and William McNamara.
The AAC is the preeminent arts institution in the State of Arkansas. Established in 1961 as an expansion of the 1937 Museum of Fine Arts, it houses an internationally recognized drawing collection. Its definition of drawings as unique works of art on paper allows watercolors to be included in its collection.
The Arkansas Arts Center has an amazing permanent collection and we are very honored that they have currated this exhibit specifically for John Brown University. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to see a broad range of techniques and styles in watercolor by some of the best painters of the last half of the 20th Century. We hope everyone will come to The Gallery to enjoy the exhibit.
