Admission Requirements

Admission into the John Brown University early childhood education degree completion program (EDC) is a two-step process.  Students who apply as early childhood education majors and meet the minimum requirements for admission into the Advance Program will be admitted as pre-candidates.  Once accepted as a pre-candidate, students will be invited to program orientation.

Admission to JBU as an EDC pre-candidate:

To be admitted into the Advance program as a pre-candidate for early childhood education, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Successful completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of transferable college credit.
  2. Minimum age of 23 with at least two years of formal or informal work experience with children.
  3. GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale) or better on all prior academic work.
  4. Successful completion of the Praxis I exam series. Scores must meet the JBU minimum requirements in reading, writing and mathematics (the JBU minimum is higher than the state minimum).
  5. Recommendations from two people (not related to the candidate) who address: the candidate's (1) professional experience and practices; (2) personal characteristics, habits, and dispositions. Reference forms are included in the application packet.

Candidates who meet some but not all of these requirements may appeal for admission consideration. (Please visit with your Advance Program representative for further information.)

New students, regardless of age or number of hours enrolled, are now required by Arkansas law to furnish proof of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella.  MMR vaccination may be confirmed by an immunization record from a doctor's office, health department, or school records.  For more information, please contact your Advance Program representative.

Admission to the EDC program:

To be admitted into the early childhood education degree completion program, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Successful completion of the Praxis II Elementary Education: Content Knowledge exam (0014). Scores must meet the JBU minimum requirements.
  2. Approved experience with children.
  3. Acceptable federal and state background checks.

Candidates may take the Praxis II Exam 0014 and apply for background checks after attending Orientation.
