Men's basketball dismantles Ecclesia in season opener
Springdale, Ark. (October 30, 2011) — The JBU men’s basketball team opened the 2011-2012 season with an 80-54 win over Ecclesia (Ark.) on Saturday afternoon in Springdale.
Five Golden Eagles finished in double figures led by juniors Abel Galliguez and Coleson Rakestraw both with 11. Senior Adrian Miller and freshmen Max Hopfgartner and Jared Johnson each added 10.
The score swayed back and forth during the opening minutes before EC managed to get hot and take a nine point 21-12 lead. But JBU put together an 8-3 run to pull within three after a trey from Galliguez at the 11:14 mark.
A Hopfgartner bucket tied things up at 26 before a Galliguez field goal gave JBU the 28-26 lead with 5:07 left in the half. After a pair of free throws from EC equalized things, the Golden Eagles clamped down on defense and closed out the half on a 21-5 run.
JBU led 49-33 at halftime after shooting 76.9% (20/26) from the flooring including 70% (7/10) from long range, while holding EC to 44% (11/25) from the field.
In the second half, JBU hit the cruise control early after sprinting out of the gate. The Golden Eagles pulled away and led by as many as 29 (66-37) before claiming the 26 point win.
For the game, JBU shot 59.6% (31-52) from the floor while limiting EC to 38.1% (16/42). JBU also won the rebounding battle 35-24.
