Ladies come up empty against MACU
Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 5, 2012) — The JBU women’s team fell 58-56 at home on Thursday night against Mid America Christian (Okla.). The loss drops the women to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Senior Chelsea Garrison led the Eagles with 17 points and seven boards followed by sophomore Sierra Shipley with 11.
For MACU (8-5, 2-5), Fayetteville, Ark. native, junior Kourtni Williams finished with a game high 23 points and four rebounds, while Parris Price tossed in 16.
JBU held a 35-31 lead heading into the break but let it slip away midway through the second half. MACU took the 46-44 lead at the 8:22 mark after a three pointer from Erica Jones. But JBU managed to hang tough and battled to a tie at 55 a piece after a trey from Shipley with 1:05 left in the game.
A bucket from Price gave MACU a two point advantage with under a minute to play, but JBU sophomore Jessica Berlin cut it back to one, 57-56, after making the first of two from the foul line with 21 seconds remaining.
JBU had a chance to take the lead after grabbing the offensive board off of Berlin's second free throw attempt but came up empty and was forced to send Williams to the line where she converted 1-of-2 with 1.4 seconds left to play. JBU had one last chance for a long attempt after grabbing the rebound off the miss but turned the ball over as time expired.
For the game, JBU shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56), while MACU shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52). JBU took the rebounding edge 40-35, but committed 18 turnovers while forcing only 13.
