When you really love what you do, it’s just about impossible to hide your enthusiasm. Anyone who spends even a few minutes talking with Dr. Rickey Casey can quickly tell just how much he loves teaching and mentoring. “To have the privilege to help students develop academically, socially, culturally and develop leadership and confidence is why I am in education,” he says. “Nothing is more rewarding than having a student tell you how they have used the tools you gave them in class to be successful in life. I believe that as an educator, I am making a difference and helping these young people prepare for their careers.”
Dr. Casey graduated from the University of the Ozarks with a B.S. degree in Accounting and Business Administration in 1979. After graduation, he worked in the banking industry as a a comptroller and vice president, and in law enforcement as an investigator. He then joined began teaching at University of the Ozarks as an adjunct and joined the faculty full-time in 1987. In addition to teaching full-time at U of O, he teaches as an adjunct for John Brown University.
Students in Dr. Casey’s classes can expect a deep level of dedication from him. He says, “Students deserve a class where they are given a chance to really participate. I do my best to make that happen. I want them to know that education can be fun…there’s no reason you can’t have fun while you learn.” He tries to always bring his enthusiasm for the subject to class, and uses real world examples to engage students and to show how the material is relevant to the “real world.” “My students have shown me that in order to be effective, I always need to keep updating my knowledge in my field and keep current,” he says. In doing so, he hopes to provide a positive learning environment where he challenges his students to apply themselves 110%. He hopes that his preparation and teaching style will equip them with the tools they need to be successful in their careers.
Dr. Casey is very interested in the role motivation plays in the success of business professionals and actively researches the subject. He has traveled extensively throughout Central America, presenting seminars to various banking institutions and researching the impact of culture on the principles of the Hackman and Oldham Model of Job Motivation and Redesign. He advises his students, “Learn how to motivate, lead, and communicate. Your ‘people skills’ will be a key for success.” He is a great admirer of the management and leadership style of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, and of Peter Drucker, a writer, teacher, and consultant who specializes in strategy and policy for business and social sector organizations.
Away from work, Dr. Casey enjoys playing racquetball and riding 4-wheelers with his family.
