Scholarships & Grants

Award Requirements

Ephesians 5:20 states that we are to . . . always give thanks for all things. . .

We are thankful that you have chosen to attend John Brown University! We are also thankful for the donor(s) who give to JBU so that you could receive this scholarship. As good stewards of the resources that have been given to JBU we want to consistently and appropriately thank those alumni and friends who give financially to JBU and report back to them on how their gifts are being used. One of the very best ways to thank our donors and to report back to them is to allow them to hear directly from you, the student who is receiving the direct benefit from their gifts.

To that end, we ask ALL JBU scholarship recipients to do four things, each of which is described in more detail below.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing to abide by the following Scholarship Award Requirements. You agree to:

  1. Write a thank you letter (or letters, as needed) to the donor(s) who support this scholarship;
  2. Make yourself available to attend JBU's annual Scholarship Dinner which takes place on campus during homecoming weekend, the first weekend of October on Friday night (Friday, October 4, 2013);
  3. Not solicit or contact any JBU donors for any reason without the prior written approval of the Scholarship Office. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting donors to seek further financial support for personal needs, personal, professional or academic projects, or contacting donors for any other purpose; and
  4. Allow JBU to use your name, photo, city, state and country of origin, area of study and the specific dollar amount of the scholarship award to which this release applies in reporting to our donors (and the public at large) how gifts to JBU are being used.

The Thank You Letter

A thank you note is required to be written by you for this scholarship each year that you receive this scholarship. The thank you note is to be written in your own words, is to be addressed to the donor (for example: "Dear Mr. Jones," or, "Dear Friends," if the scholarship is given by someone who wishes to remain anonymous), and should include, at a minimum, a brief biography about yourself-your name (of course), major, classification, and what you hope to do after graduating from John Brown University. As well, the thank you note should be personally signed by you.

Information will be sent to you within the first 2-3 weeks after your arrival at JBU for the fall semester. You will have two weeks (in some instances less than two weeks) to complete your note(s) and return them to the Sherry Miller in University Advancement - GnD (general delivery). If you have any questions about this process, Sherry Miller can be reached by phone at 524-7330 and by email at smiller@jbu.edu .

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing to abide by the above requirements and to complete the above described thank you note(s) in a timely fashion. If you fail to abide by the above requirements or fail to complete the required thank you note(s) in a timely fashion you also agree and understand that this scholarship may be removed from your financial aid package (at JBU's discretion) and that you will be personally responsible to make up the difference from your own resources.

The Annual Scholarship Dinner

All scholarship recipients are required to be available to attend our annual Scholarship Dinner which takes place on campus during homecoming weekend in October. This year the dinner is on Friday, October 4, 2013. The purpose of this dinner is to provide an opportunity for our donors to meet some of the students who are the recipients of their generosity. Not ALL scholarship recipients will be asked to attend this dinner; however, ALL scholarship recipients are required to be available for this dinner.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing, if you are asked, to attend the above described special campaign event. If you are invited to attend the special celebration dinner and fail to attend, you agree and understand that this scholarship may be removed from your financial aid package (at JBU's discretion) and that you will be personally responsible to make up the difference from your own resources.

Contact with JBU Donors

For consistency and appropriateness, please only contact individual JBU donors through the JBU Scholarship Office. Do not contact JBU donors directly and do not solicit or contact any JBU donors without the prior written approval of the Scholarship Office. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting donors to seek further financial support for personal needs, personal, professional or academic projects, or contacting donors for any other purpose.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing not to contact JBU donors for any reason without express written permission from the Scholarship Office. If you do contact JBU donors without express written permission from the Scholarship Office, you agree and understand that this scholarship may be removed from your financial aid package (at JBU's discretion) and that you will be personally responsible to make up the difference from your own resources.

Release of Your Picture and Personal Information

An important part of our stewardship practice is to report back to our donors in various ways with specific information about our student scholarship recipients.

By clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter, you are agreeing to allow JBU to use your name, your photo, your city, state and country of origin, your area of study, extra-curricular activities in which you may be involved and the specific dollar amount awarded to you from this scholarship in reporting to our donors (and the public at large) how gifts to JBU are being used. If releasing any of the above information could cause a security risk for you or any of your family members, please contact Sherry Miller in the Scholarship Office (479-524-7330; smiller@jbu.edu) before clicking the submit button on your electronic financial aid award letter.
