Dr. John Carmack is a licensed therapist in both Texas and Arkansas. He is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and is an approved supervisor in the state of Arkansas for Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists.
Dr. Carmack has a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He received an M.Div. from Trinity International University (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.
Dr. Carmack has worked in a variety of settings: churches, Young Life, Christian Counseling Centers, full service psychiatric hospitals, med/surg psychiatric units and private practice. He has been in private practice since 1981. He owned and directed the Solution-Focused Counseling Center located in Fort Smith, Arkansas for 10 years. Dr. Carmack has been on the faculty of John Brown University since 1997 as a Professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy program. He accepted an appointment as Program Director of the Graduate Counseling Program at JBU in 2001. He received his CISM training in 2001. He has served in two major disaster relief efforts as the mental health coordinator for Hurricane’s Katrina and Rita evacuees at Ft. Chaffee, AR. He has provided critical incident responses to various schools, organizations and companies over the past 10 years. The most recent critical incident he led was for mental and medical first responder’s debriefings during the Joplin Tornado disaster in 2011.
Dr. Carmack has been appointed by the governor to the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling (1997-2000). He is currently serving a second term on the Arkansas Board of Examiners (2010-2013). He was awarded the Clinicians Award through the Arkansas Marriage & Family Therapy Association. He is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He served as the Associate Editor (2000-2007) for all clinical articles submitted for publication to the Marriage & Family: A Christian Journal.
Dr. Carmack is a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas and this year he celebrates his 36th wedding anniversary with Lynn. They have three daughters, four grandsons and one granddaughter. All three of Dr. Carmack’s children are in the mental health field.
