About

The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences promotes the intellectual, spiritual and emotional development of JBU students as well as faculty, staff, alumni and visitors. The Division develops well-rounded, thoughtful people who are prepared to take their places in the world and who realize their potential as salt and light.

The Division serves an important role in the general education curriculum of the university, offering core and major classes that:

  • stimulate critical thinking
  • expose students to the arts and literature
  • develop an understanding of Western and non-Western history and traditions
  • help students gain knowledge of our political practices and place in the world
  • provide courses that give students an understanding of human behavior
  • stimulate students to be lifelong learners in the humanities and social sciences
  • provide language skills that are proving more and more useful in our society
