Matt Dye ’13 knows all about the need to communicate well both in and out of the classroom.
“My speech and debate class taught me skills that I use in my current job,” Matt said. “People want to hire individuals who can quickly outline what they want to say, articulate well, influence others and think on their feet. If you learn how to speak well, people will listen.”
The Bachelor of Science in Communication prepares students for opportunities in a variety of corporate, non-profit and public communication roles.
The general communication major allows students to choose an emphasis in Digital Journalism, Public Relations, Social Advocacy or Radio/TV/Web. This exposure gives students training in a variety of media outlets such as writing for the student newspaper, broadcasting on the online radio station or producing the yearbook.
Students prepare for careers in both faith-based and secular communication fields by undertaking leadership roles like directing plays, learning camerawork, joining the debate team and producing radio content.
The communication degree prepares students for work in media industries, businesses, non-profit organizations and ministries requiring excellent written, interpersonal, organizational, oral and media production skills.
What stands out to Matt about JBU’s communication major? “I love how versatile each of the classes are,” he said. “Learning to use different forms of media gives you an advantage.”
