James Cooke joined the Engineering Division in July 2013. He received his B.S. in history from JBU in 2011 and went on to receive his M.A. in history from Queen’s University Belfast in 2012. Though he’s spent a lot of time around the liberal arts, he grew up around engineers and architects. His father is a licensed architect, and James worked for him as an assistant draftsman working on construction drawings. He has also enjoys learning how things work, and has been known to disassemble electronics, appliances, and small engines to see how they work. His brother is currently studying civil engineering, and James also roomed with an engineer and a construction management major while he attended JBU. Those relationships and interests encouraged him to pursue his current position as an Admissions Counselor for prospective Engineering, Construction Management, and Renewable Energy majors. He enjoys being a part of connecting prospective students to the professional degrees available in the division. James is originally from Arizona and is excited to be back at JBU and a part of the work God is doing through JBU. In his free time he enjoys photography, hiking, reading, spending time with friends, and always enjoys a good book with a cup of tea.

The Lord led Shermana to JBU in July, 1990 after a 20-year career in banking, where she accepted the position of Secretary to the Chair of the Division of Engineering and Technology, Dr. James Pearson. As the years passed, her title changed to Office Manager and then to Administrative Assistant and the Division became the Division of Engineering and Construction Management. Shermana has served in this capacity to four Division Chairs and has been the Mom-Away-From-Home to hundreds of students. Shermana was born and raised in New Mexico, but after 42 years she considers Siloam Springs home. She has been married to her husband, Glenn for 45 years and has two children and four grandchildren who bring great joy to her life. Shermana loves her job and is blessed to work with Godly men and women.

Robert Smith came to JBU in 2010, following a series of careers in engineering, international ministries and small business. His Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is from Queen’s University in Canada. His first hire was with Schlumberger S.A. in the Middle East oil fields. Later he developed his engineering career in technical projects in the consumer product and the optical waveguide industries, in Canada and USA. Robert then left the corporate arena and moved into international ministry with the organization HCJB Global, contributing in the context of technical and organizational management, first in Ecuador and then in the founding of the HCJB’s broadcasting work in North Africa/Middle East Region. Soon after the initial start-up was in place, the Smith’s moved to Colorado Springs with HCJB Global. After a few years back in the USA he migrated into small business development. Robert’s work in the JBU Engineering community has been in supporting roles for faculty and students, in the areas of labs and projects. He looks at resources from a systems point of view and appreciates applying the creative process in technology and organizations. He enjoys the opportunity of sharing his perspective as a practicing engineer with students. His interests include entrepreneurial business, understanding spirituality from an engineering perspective, and of course, technology. His wife, Verna is also Canadian and they have five grown children, all married, and at this time, five grandchildren.
