Cinema

Position

John Brown University has a new full-time position open in Cinema beginning August 1, 2009. Teaching responsibilities will focus on cinema genre, history, theory, and digital production areas such as cinematography, editing, and compositing. A background in traditional or digital photography is also preferred. Department faculty have the opportunity to participate in the department’s annual European Art Tour program.

Program

The Department of Visual Arts, a highly successful and growing department, offers majors in graphic design, illustration, digital media arts (cinema and digital art), photography, and is developing a new major in studio art. Currently, there are approximately 235 students in these four majors with eight full-time faculty plus adjuncts. The campus hosts large, well-equipped labs in both Mac and PC platforms. The department occupies a newly renovated 3-story facility that includes drawing and painting classrooms, computer labs, a gallery, a photography studio, traditional darkroom and workrooms.

Qualifications

An MFA in cinema or related area is preferred, or comparable professional experience is required. Professional experience in film production is valuable as is experience in photography, cinematography, or video editing and compositing. Preference will be given to those with a substantial portfolio and a professional record. Effective teaching experience, evidence of scholarly potential, and a passion for teaching and spiritual formation within the evangelical tradition is essential. Candidates should also be willing to contribute to university life in areas such as academic advising, recruiting for the major, and committee service.

Salary

A competitive salary exists which will be commensurate with training and/or experience.

Position begins August 1, 2009. Screening process begins October 15, 2008, and continues until the position is filled.
