Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 19, 2002) - The Oklahoma Baptist University men’s basketball team entered Monday night’s game against JBU with only two losses, ranked first in the Sooner Athletic Conference and third in the NAIA. In the last meeting between the two teams, OBU won by a deuce.
OBU won the second meeting on Monday night by a more comfortable margin, beating JBU 94-83.
As the first half unfolded, it appeared that another close game was in order. JBU held a lead that fluctuated around seven points during the first twenty minutes, but OBU was able to shave the lead down to three by half-time. Things stayed close as the second half began, but JBU missed some critical free throws and OBU pulled into a lead it would never relinquish with ten minutes left in the game.
Leading scorer for OBU was junior guard Nate Boylan with 24. Senior forward Dujuan Brown scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds for OBU, and junior center Scott Prater scored 20 and pulled down six boards.
JBU was led in scoring by sophomore guard Abdiel Mendietta with 19 points. Also scoring in double figures for JBU was senior guard Simeon Hinsey, 16 points; senior center Jahir Mejia, 14 points; and senior forward Nathan Law, 13 points.
JBU now holds a 17-11 season record and is 7-9 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. OBU is 23-6 on the year and 14-2 in SAC competition.
JBU has two more games left before the SAC tournament, both away. The first is against Southern Nazarene University on Thursday, and the second is against St. Gregory’s University on Saturday.
