Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 21, 2004) - JBU women captured a 66-53 victory on Saturday night against Oklahoma Christian University to sweep the season series with the Eagles. The Golden Eagles came out of the gate somewhat slowly with their first basket coming two minutes into the game. JBU was then able to extend their lead to 9-0 with 16:42 left in the first half. Bethany Sites and Brooke Warder fueled JBU's 9-0 run with three point shooting. The hot shooting behind the arc continued with three treys, two by Lesli Fanning and the other by Ashley Wettengel to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 13 at the 8:52 mark. JBU's largest first half lead of 18 points came with 2:05 to go in the first period on a Natalie Reid lay up to push the score to 35-17. Leading 35-20 the Golden Eagles took a 15-point lead into the locker room.
Oklahoma Christian outscored JBU 10-2 in the first 5 minutes of the second half, closing the gap to 37-30. Kendra McCormick's three-point play on a lay up and free throw pushed the scored back to 40-30 at the 14:47 mark. Oklahoma Christian continued to whittle the margin, finally coming within 4 points with 10:46 remaining in the game as Sarah Stanley hit a field goal for the Eagles. From that point JBU began its drive to the final margin of 13 on the shooting of Wettengel who scored 6 points in the last two minutes of play.
Ashley Wettengel and Kendra McCormick led the way for the Golden Eagles with 15 points apiece. Wettengel also added 11 rebounds to finish with a double double.
"It feels great to have a winning record at home, and we felt like going into the season if we could defend our home court we would be in a good position in the Sooner Athletic Conference," stated assistant coach Von Eshnaur following the win.
The Golden Eagles move to 10-6 in Sooner Athletic play and 21-8 for the season and now travel to Texas next week to play Wayland Baptist on Thursday and Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
