Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 26, 2004) - In a game to determine third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference, The Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist took advantage of the lackluster play by John Brown University and came away with a 63-54 victory. Wayland Baptist controlled the game at the start of both halves and was able to stretch their second half lead to 10 points, 57-47, when Rachel Smith hit a 2 pointer with 3:40 to play. JBU came back to within 5 with 2:40 left in the game on two free throws by Ashley Wettengel and a trey by Alicia Baer. From that point on, the Golden Eagles were unable to score as Wayland’s Stephanie Shaw hit a free throw and a two point basket to end the game at 63-54.
Shaw was the big gun for Wayland with 22 points, 12 more than her season average. For JBU, Kendra McCormick, with 18 points, and Wettengel, with 15, were the top scorers.
JBU drops to 21-9 on the season and 10-7 in the SAC and will now be in fourth place in the league standings as Wayland Baptist takes over sole possession of third.
The Golden Eagles remain in West Texas for a contest Saturday afternoon against Lubbock Christian at 1:00 pm.
