JBU's Mejia and Elliot Chosen SAC All-Conference
Siloam Springs, Ark (February 25, 2002) — Two John Brown University basketball players were named to the Sooner Athletic Conference All-Conference teams Monday, February 25. Golden Eagle Jahir Mejia was chosen second team All-SAC, and Lady Golden Eagle Katie Elliot was chosen 3rd team All-SAC. Receiving honorable mention all-conference honors were Nathan Law and Aldo McKay for the men and Sofie Voordeckers for the women.
Mejia, a senior engineering major from Panama City, Panama, led the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 14.3 points and 6.83 rebounds per game. This was Mejia’s second consecutive season to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding. Mejia currently ranks third all-time at JBU in scoring with 1643 career points and now holds the career rebound mark with 856 career rebounds, breaking the old mark of 810 held by former JBU standout Carlos Avrard. Last season, Mejia became only the third Golden Eagle ever to be chosen NAIA All-American.
"Jahir has had a huge impact on our program. He will go down as one of the best Golden Eagles of all time. He has come a long way from his freshman season. With a double major in Engineering he will continue to be successful in his life after basketball," commented coach John Sheehy.
Elliot, a junior from Warsaw, Indiana, leads JBU in scoring (13.5 ppg), rebounding (6.45), 3-point percentage (43.8), free throw percentage (82.9) and assists (75).
Coach Jeff Soderquist is especially proud of the improvements Katie made this past summer. "She has had a terrific junior season improving in nearly every facet of her game", commented Soderquist.
Receiving SAC Academic All-Conference recognition for the Men and Women’s basketball teams for their accomplishment in the classroom are Brian Matchell, Joe Manthe, Sofie Voordeckers and Saralin Wolfe. These student-athletes are upper classmen who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better.
