Sooner Athletic Conference Recognizes Three Golden Eagles
Siloam Springs, Ark. (March 10, 2004) — Three John Brown University Golden Eagle basketball players have been selected for Sooner Athletic Conference Honors. Alex Terry, a 6’1 sophomore guard from Cedar Hill, Texas has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. Sophomore Brandon Cole, a 6’1 guard from Hector, Arkansas was named to the First Team all-conference and senior Abdiel Mendietta, a 5’10 guard from Panama City, Panama, was selected to the Second Team all-conference.
Terry contributed offensively as well as defensively to the Golden Eagles’ winning season. Terry leads the team in assists with 146. He is second on the blocked shots list with 22, has 26 steals on the season and averages 7.35 points per game while shooting 45.3% from the field and 37% from beyond the 3-point arc.
Cole, in less than two years of play, has become the all-time leader for the Golden Eagles in three-pointers made with 246 currently to his credit. He leads the team in scoring with an average of 14.5 points per game while shooting 41.2% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range. His season high is 30 points and he has led the team in scoring on 10 different occasions this season. He also shoots 72.1% from the charity stripe and hauls down 3.74 rebounds per game. Cole has already surpassed the 1000 point mark in scoring with 1018 points thus far in two years of play.
Mendietta, with games still to play, has moved to 7th on the all-time JBU scoring list with 1366 points in his career. He leads the team this year in steals with 32 and is second on the scoring list with 14.0 points per game. Mendieta shoots 37.8% from the field and 33.3% from beyond three-point range. Mendieta also has a season high of 30 points and has led the team in scoring in 10 games this year.
“It is great to see our players honored this way,” said JBU Coach John Sheehy on learning of the recognition. “There are some very fine players in the SAC and to have a first and second team selection speaks well of our program. I am proud of the way these three have contributed to our success this year.”
