Tyson: no smoking

(April 6, 2004) — (Springdale-AP) The smoking lamp is out at Tyson Foods facilities. The Springdale-based company says that all its production plants and support buildings are now smoke-free, a move it hopes will protect the health and safety of 120-thousand workers at Tyson locations worldwide. The new policy at the world's largest meat-processing company requires anyone who wants to smoke to use only designated smoking areas outside the company's buildings. In making the decision to go smokeless, Tyson cited the costs of employee smoking, including higher illness rates and absenteeism, lost productivity, and in the long run, the cost of health insurance.
