JBU Speech and Debate Hosts C.S. Lewis Read-a-thon

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 12, 2003) — In only its third season, the John Brown University Speech and Debate team has qualified 17 students for the National Christian College Forensics Invitational in San Diego, California, March 14-16.

To help defray costs, the team will host a C.S. Lewis Read-a-thon. Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17th, members of the team will read aloud the renowned author’s books in the “Chronicles of Narnia” series. Their goal is to start with the first book and read through the last book in the series by 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18th. The read-a-thon will take place on the balcony of the Walker Student Center on the campus of John Brown University.

Students are seeking sponsorships for each of the seven books to be read in the read-a-thon.

“It’s not only great exposure for the team and their speaking abilities,” said coach Jason Hough, “it is great exposure for JBU and a great author.”

A challenge may await the participating students as cold temperatures are forecast for next week.

“I’ll just bundle up and have fun with it,” said freshman team member Virginia Moor. “I’ll just think of the sun we’ll have in San Diego.”

The public is welcome to stop by and hear the readings. Anyone interested in sponsoring the team can contact coach Hough at (479) 524-7179, or via email at jhough@jbu.edu .
