Walenciak Chosen for SIFE Advisory Group
Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 8, 2004) — John Brown University’s Dr. Joe Walenciak, professor of business, was recently appointed to the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) USA Faculty Advisory Committee. The thirteen advisory committee members, representing the diverse population of SIFE faculty and schools, were chosen from over 90 applicants. SIFE is an international nonprofit organization that gives students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. SIFE challenges students on more than 800 college campuses nationwide to take what they learn in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities. Guided by faculty advisors who are named Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows (in honor of the late Wal-Mart founder), SIFE Teams establish a variety of community outreach programs that teach free enterprise. JBU SIFE's goal is to reach out to their campus and community and to motivate individuals to take part in the market economy. Their projects include Operation Christmas Child, Guatemala and Honduras community development, English as a second language classes, Spanish as a second language classes, community business assistance, and a northwest Arkansas world trade exposition for middle school students. JBU and Guatemala’s Universidad Francisco Marroquin SIFE teams are joining forces to assist the Cooperatvie Ixel, a group of Guatemalan women, in developing their businesses and supporting their community. Dr. Walenciak is currently strategizing about the three phases of the project: obtaining legal status for the Cooperativa, helping develop their business in Guatemala, and exploring the possibility of importing products into the United States.
