JBU Men Get Big Win Against #2 Northwestern Oklahoma

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 20, 2005) — Facing the Sooner Athletic Conference #2 ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers (12-6, 4-2 SAC), the John Brown men’s basketball team pulled off the upset at home, 67-62. The Rangers held the Golden Eagle’s leading scorer, Brandon Cole, to 12 points and only two treys for the night, but his teammate senior Pat Smits stepped up to fill the gap, making five treys and leading the scoring with 21.

The teams traded baskets for most of the first half, with the largest lead of four by the Rangers in the first 15 minutes of play. JBU made a run in the last five minutes of the half to put the Golden Eagles up by nine, 31-22. The largest lead of the game came at the 10:52 mark of the second half, with JBU up by 16. The Rangers put on their full court press and were able to cut JBU’s lead to only three with 1:14 left, but free throw shooting by the Golden Eagles held the Rangers off and gave JBU the five point win.

Smits led the scoring with 21 and also contributed five rebounds. Senior Reyjavick De Gracia added 14 points and six rebounds. Cole had five rebounds to go along with his 12 points. The Golden Eagles shot 41% from the field and held their opponent to 32%.
