JBU Women’s Soccer Competes in Milwaukee Tournament

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 5, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles participated Friday through Monday in the Froedtert Women’s Soccer College Showcase in Milwaukee, Wis., hosted by Cardinal Stritch University and the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club. JBU’s first game was Friday against 17th-ranked McKendree (Ill.). Nikki Ganter and Crystal Perez scored for the Golden Eagles, but four JBU shots missed after hitting the goalposts or crossbar, and the game ended in a 2-2 double-overtime tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wall preserved the tie with a big save in overtime.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles faced Aquinas (Mich.). John Brown controlled the ball most of the game and had numerous chances to score, but the Aquinas defense was able to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless in regulation and force overtime. Aquinas goalkeeper Kristina Gladstone made nine saves in the process, but she couldn’t stop Crystal Perez from scoring in the 4th minute of overtime to give John Brown the 1-0 victory. Amber Aparicio made the assist.

John Brown had Sunday off, but faced 2nd-ranked Robert Morris (Ill.) on Labor Day morning. Smarting from two earlier defeats in the tournament, Robert Morris started out strong, scoring about 15 minutes into the game. But JBU answered in the 24th minute with a goal by Ganter, assisted by Perez. Neither team scored in the second half, and this game went to overtime as well, with Robert Morris winning it on a corner-kick goal in the 3rd minute.

Regarding the tournament, JBU head coach Joe Thoma remarked, “It was a good experience for the girls….I think it will help us down the line.”

John Brown (3-1-1) now travels home to Siloam Springs where they will take on Central Arkansas Thursday at 4:00.
