Golden Eagles Defeat UA-Fort Smith
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 12, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles men’s tennis team opened its 2005-06 season with a 6-3 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith Wednesday in Siloam Springs. John Brown’s Kevin Coleman and Sam Van Aswegen won their doubles match 8-6 over Brock Dial and Jordan Isom. Austin Phillips and Bobby Rojas also won 8-2 for John Brown in doubles against Rhett Rickman and Carlos Albuja, but the Golden Eagles’ Peter Thulson and Roberto Reyes dropped their match 3-8 to Curtis Abbott and Josh Padgett. In singles play, Thulson won 6-1, 6-0 over Abbott; Phillips defeated Albuja 6-2, 6-0; Rojas beat Isom 6-1, 6-1; and Van Aswegen defeated Rickman 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Coleman, hobbled by a sprained ankle, lost to Dial 0-6, 2-6; and Reyes fell to Padgett 2-6, 4-6. It was a particularly special day for John Brown's Phillips, who won two matches on his birthday.
