Golden Eagles Win on Senior Night

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 1, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles won their Senior Night match 3-0 over Southwest Baptist (Mo.) Tuesday in Siloam Springs. John Brown (29-6) trailed 10-2 at one point in the first game, but came back to win 30-28. The Golden Eagles took the last two games 30-23, 30-25 from the Bearcats, who have struggled all season in close matches.

All three John Brown seniors had solid performances. Tati Silva of Sao Paulo, Brazil, led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16 kills and 4 aces; Elisa Mendieta of Memphis scored 12 kills and made 3 blocks; and Christine Wells of Red Oak, Tex., made 26 digs. Juniors Juliana Todescan and Summer Cox contributed 45 assists and 7 kills, respectively.

After the match, each of the seniors expressed sadness about the approaching close of their careers at John Brown.

“It just feels kind of surreal,” Wells said. “It’s one of those moments you don’t expect to come. You never think about your volleyball career coming to an end.”

Mendieta commented, “It’s a sad night for us, but it was a lot of fun to go out and play one more time with your team in your home gym.”

Silva added, “It feels good and bad at the same time. It’s good because volleyball is my passion and because I’m moving on to the next phase of my life. But my heart is a little bit smaller tonight because I’m coming to the end of my career.”

The sadness was balanced by optimism; however, as the seniors also said they were looking forward to the rest of the season, which might include a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. “These next few weeks will be exciting,” Mendieta concluded.

Head coach Robyn Gordon commended her seniors saying, “They’re just three amazing ladies who really represent JBU well. They’re three solid, mature athletes, and they’ll be a tough class to replace.”

John Brown travels to Bethany, Okla., Thursday to face Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Southern Nazarene.
