JBU Women Qualify for Nationals
Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 9, 2005) — The John Brown Golden Eagles clinched the NAIA Region VI title and a berth in the NAIA national tournament Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Okla. The win was the Golden Eagles’ second over the Bison in the three times they have faced each other since Oct. 25.
Oklahoma Baptist’s Hilary Hendrickson gave the Bison an early 1-0 lead in the 7th minute off an assist by Katya Arruda, but John Brown tied the score in the 23rd minute when Crystal Perez scored on a corner kick by Nikki Ganter. The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 57th minute on an Allie Newburn goal that was assisted by Ganter. The final tally was then delivered in the 75th minute by Abby Leonard on an assist from Kendra Rehner.
The Golden Eagles out-shot the Bison 17-9, and finished the game with 12 corner kicks. The Bison had no corner kicks and only took three shots in the second half.
After the game, head coach Joe Thoma said, “I’m just extremely proud of the girls. They played so well together here. There wasn’t a star; it was a total team effort. It was just fun to watch. We got down by a goal today, and the girls just ramped it up after that.”
John Brown (13-5-1) will travel to Olathe, Kan., next week to participate in the national tournament. It will be the first trip to the tournament for the Golden Eagle women’s soccer program, which began competition in 2002.
