Golden Eagles Shoot Down Flying Queens

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 12, 2006) — The John Brown women’s basketball team’s Sooner Athletic Conference win streak reached three games Thursday night with a 62-56 road victory over Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas. Lesli Fanning hit 5-of-7 three-pointers to score 17 points, and Nancy Pierre scored 18, hitting all seven of her free-throw attempts. Ashley Wettengel joined her teammates in double figures with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Pierre also grabbed 8 rebounds.

John Brown (11-5, 3-1) led Wayland Baptist (5-10, 0-4) through most of the first half, but Miranda Damiano hit two free throws with 6:36 remaining before halftime to give the Flying Queens an 18-16 lead. Wettengel tied the score 22-22 with a jumper at the 4:22 mark, but Wayland Baptist held onto a 30-26 lead at halftime.

John Brown opened the second half with a 10-0 run to lead 36-30 with 16:09 left. Fanning gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the game, 46-39, with a trey at the 11:58 mark, and then Pierre pushed the margin back to seven, 48-41, with a pair of free throws two minutes later. But the Flying Queens were not finished yet. Nikki Wallace made a layup with 3:39 remaining to tie the score 52-52. Fanning, however, answered on the ensuing possession, nailing a three-pointer on an assist by Wettengel to put John Brown ahead 55-52. Wayland Baptist cut the lead to one twice more, but free throws by Pierre and a jumper by Kendra McCormick ended those threats.

John Brown shot 40.4% from the field and 38.9% from behind the 3-point arc, and scored 25 points off 17 Wayland Baptist turnovers. Vanita Wright scored 14 points and secured 13 rebounds for the Flying Queens.
