Opening Tournament Provides Tough Challenge for Volleyball
Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 29, 2006) - John Brown University faced several tough opponents during competition over the weekend in the Northwestern Red Raider Classic in Orange City, IA. The Golden Eagles finished the tournament 0-4 losing to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 1-3 and Dordt College (Iowa) 2-3 on Friday, and on Saturday losing 0-3 against Hastings (Neb.) and 0-3 against Concordia (Neb).
“This was some great competition to start the year. Not fun to come back 0-4, but we did play some solid volleyball and we improved tremendously from our scrimmage,” commented Head Volleyball Coach, Robyn Gordon. “Hopefully playing this level of competition early will help us when we get to conference and playoffs down the road. We could have played in an easier tourney and came back 4-0, but it wouldn't have pushed the girls to continue to practice harder. I'm confident this will help us down the road.”
Sophomore Laurae Marty and senior Sam Rogoff led the team in kills over the course of the tournament with 35 and 34 respectively, and Juliana Todescan added 126 assists and 67 digs to her career totals.
John Brown University will have its season opener on Saturday (Sept. 2) against NCAA Division II opponent, Pittsburg State University, at 7:00 pm in Murray Sells Gymnasium.
