Golden Eagles Outpaced by Oklahoma Christian
Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 26, 2006) — Goals came in clusters Tuesday in Siloam Springs as the John Brown Golden Eagles lost to Oklahoma Christian 4-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Oklahoma Christian scored in the 10th and 28th minutes and never looked back.
Phillip Hooever got things started with a 40-yard unassisted strike in the 10th minute. Matt Clark followed in the 28th with an unassisted breakaway goal, and the Eagles took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
John Brown rapidly cut its deficit in half as sophomore forward Garrett Horton scored in the 47th minute from 30 yards out, assisted by sophomore midfielder Akeem Grant. The Golden Eagle rally was short-lived, however. Oklahoma Christian answered in the 50th minute when Brady Nikkel tapped a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Watson in the box, giving the Eagles a 3-1 advantage. Clark had the assist on that play. In the 52nd, it was Kurk Ziegler and Preston Okwuonu who teamed up for a score, with Ziegler taking Okwuonu’s assist.
After those frantic first seven minutes of the second half, neither team seriously threatened again. Watson made 8 saves for John Brown (3-4-3, 0-3-2 SAC), and Bryan Cochrum made 7 for Oklahoma Christian (6-2-1, 2-2-1 SAC).
The Golden Eagles travel Saturday to St. Gregory’s (Okla.) for a 3:00 match.
