Volleyball Falls in SAC Tourney but Earn Various Honors

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 11, 2006) — John Brown University women’s volleyball came up empty in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match against Southern Nazarene on Saturday night. The ladies, who defeated Oklahoma City earlier in the day 3-1 to advance into the championship match, fell in three games 22-30, 27-30, 20-30. Nicole Schmidt led the way with 11 kills, followed by Laurae Marty with five. Brittany Moon had 18 digs.

In their earlier match up against Oklahoma City, Marty and Schmidt had 16 kills each, and Juliana Todescan totaled 52 assists and four aces. Marty and Schmidt were each named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.

Although the Golden Eagles were unable to walk away with the tournament championship, they were rewarded for their play throughout the regular season. Head coach Robyn Gordon was named SAC Coach of the Year after leading her team to a perfect 10-0 in SAC conference play, and senior setter, Juliana Todescan was named Conference Most Valuable Player and Setter of the Year to go along with her first team selection. Laurae Marty was also named First Team All-Conference, and Samantha Rogoff and Brittany Moon were named Second Team All-Conference, while Rachel Melby and Aubrey Junker were both Honorable Mention.

John Brown (20-19, 10-0) now moves on to the regional tournament, which will take place Nov. 17-18 at Houston Baptist. The seeding for the tournament will be released on Monday.
