Men Return to Action with a Win
Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 30, 2006) — In their first game back from the Christmas layoff, the John Brown University Golden Eagles shook off the holiday rust easily defeating Central Baptist (Ark.) 93-71.
Sophomore Cody Page led the way with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting including 5-of-6 from long range, and junior center Joel Tesis followed close behind with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists, three shy of a triple-double. Junior guard, Alex Green also came out strong for the Golden Eagles, dishing out 11 assists while scoring 12 points. Marcus White led Central Baptist with 17.
John Brown (9-3) started off slow, going down 5-0 in the early minutes of the game, but quickly closed the gap on a pair of baskets from Page. John Brown would build on its momentum and eventually take a 45-39 lead into the break, and would extend its lead after opening the second half on a 10-0 run. At the 11:00 mark in the second half, Central Baptist would cut the lead down to eight after forcing several John Brown turnovers that they converted into easy baskets. John Brown, however, would regain their composure and score several easy baskets of their own after settling down to break the Central Baptist press. This allowed John Brown to regain control of the game and go on for the win.
John Brown shot 62% (41-66) for the game including 38% (6-16) from 3 point range, while holding Central Baptist to only 37% (22-60) for the contest. John Brown also committed 20 turnovers which was overshadowed by a season high 34 assists.
Head coach John Sheehy is satisfied with his teams play for the first half of the season and is looking forward to beginning conference play.
“Its good to get a win on the road, and it felt like we had good focus out there on the court,” said Sheehy. “We’ve been successful to go 9-3 in our non-conference schedule, and we look forward to the 18 conference games ahead of us.”
John Brown will begin Sooner Athletic Conference play next Thursday, Jan. 4th when they travel to Shawnee, Okla. to take on St. Gregory’s. The women will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and the men at 8:00.
