Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 7, 2007) - John Brown University volleyball experienced growing pains on day one of the Baker (Kan.) University Tournament on Friday. The young Golden Eagle squad fell in both matches losing to Benedictine (Kan.) earlier in the day 3-0 (29-31, 28-30, 24-30). And after letting a two game lead slip away in their second match, JBU eventually fell 3-2 (30-27, 32-30, 21-30, 21-30, 17-19) to tournament host Baker.
“We learned a tough lesson today,” said head coach Robyn Gordon. “We had the lead against Baker but didn’t finish the game.”
In their first match, Laurae Marty paced the team in kills with seven. Britney Kerns totaled 14 assists and Shannon Proctor led the defense with 15 digs.
Against Baker, Christi Newton led with 14 kills and five blocks. Alyssa Hanson had 21 assists while Proctor totaled 18 digs. John Brown (2-4) will return to action on Saturday when they face Avila (Mo.) at 9 a.m. and William Jewell (Mo.) at 1 p.m.
