Gustavson Picks Up JBU Career Win 300

Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 10, 2007) — John Brown University men’s soccer team gave head coach Bob Gustavson a treat today after defeating St. Gregory’s (Okla.) 3-2 and helping him earn his 300th win at JBU.

The game looked like it was over early on after JBU jumped out to a 2-0 lead following Akeem Grant and Caleb Theimer’s goals in the 8th and 20th minutes respectively. Vinicius Morais picked up the assist on Grant’s goal and Juan Iraola on Theimer’s. However, St. Greg’s wouldn’t go away and scored two goals within one minute of each other to tie the game. The first came in the 35th minute when Andrew Blue found James Press to put SGU on the board. Carlos Quintero notched the second after converting a penalty kick opportunity in the 36th minute. It would stand tied 2-2 at intermission.

Both teams stepped up defensively in the second half, until the 75th minute when Jerry Carcamo spotted a hole in the defense off the corner kick and found Theimer who headed it in for his second goal of the day.

John Brown would hold on for the final 15 minutes and walk away with their first conference win of the year.

Gustavson was pleased with his team’s performance and excited about the milestone victory but was more thrilled about getting the conference win. “I told the boys reaching that mark was great, but I’m happier that we won the game,” said Gustavson. “This win puts us in position to make the conference tournament at the end of the year.”

Up next, John Brown (4-6, 1-2) travels to Bethany, Okla. to face the fourth-ranked Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
