Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 21, 2008) - John Brown women’s basketball broke an eight game losing streak on Thursday night after defeating Oklahoma Christian at home 63-59.
JBU (8-19, 3-16) got off to a hot start in the first half behind the shooting of junior Claire Harrison, who opened the game up with a pair of treys.
OC (14-12, 10-9) wouldn’t be denied, however, and fought back to take a 31-30 lead in to the locker rooms.
In the second half, JBU once again jumped out of the gates and controlled the momentum, and with 8:40 left in the game, sophomore Lenece Glossett drained a trey to put JBU ahead by 10, 51-41.
With leading scorer Kailan DeCamp fouling out down the stretch, OC looked to second leading scorer Lindsey Gipson to help her team pull within four points, 60-56 after she hit a lay-up with under a minute left in the game.
After a pair of JBU freethrows, OC’s Haley Myers came down and drilled a three-pointer in the corner with 3.2 seconds left in the game to cut the gap to 62-59. JBU was able to get the ball inbounds and OC fouled to send JBU to the line where Casey Shivers made 1-of-2 attempts to seal the win.
Stepping up big for JBU was Harrison with 18 points after going 7-of-12 from the floor including 4-of-8 from downtown.
“Claire being able to hit those threes early on made it possible to open up things for us in the second half,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “She did a great job getting things rolling for us in the game.”
Ashley Taylor also had a big night picking up the double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
For the game, JBU shot 46% while holding OC to 39%. OC, however, won the battle of the boards 39-31 and also forced JBU to commit 19 turnovers while only getting 17.
JBU returns to the floor at home on Saturday against Northwestern Okla. State at 1 p.m.
