Women End Basketball Season

Edmond, Okla. (March 7, 2008) — John Brown University’s women’s basketball season came to an end on Friday evening after falling 96-47 in Sooner Athletic Conference tournament action to the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City.

It was all OCU (26-4) from the jump as the Lady Stars controlled the tempo from the beginning. After scoring 21 points off of 14 JBU turnovers in the first half, OCU held on to an 42-19 halftime lead.

The second half mirrored the first as OCU continued to score off JBU turnovers. The closest JBU got in the second half was 18, 45-27, at the 17:00 mark.

JBU was held to 33% (19-57) shooting for the game, while OCU managed to knock down 51% (35-69) of their shots. In the rebounding column OCU took the advantage 48-32.

Individually, seven OCU players reached double digits led by SAC Women’s Player of the Year Viola Beybeyah with 16 points and eight rebounds.

For JBU, Micaela Cully and Lenece Glossett finished with nine each.

Although the women end the season with an overall record of 11-21, 5-17 in the SAC, head coach Jeff Soderquist is optimistic about the future of his team.

“With five starters returning, we’ll have a good nucleus that we can build on,” said Soderquist. “But we still have to get better individually if we want to compete with teams of Oklahoma City’s caliber.”
