Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 4, 2008) - The John Brown University women’s basketball team opened their season with an 80-62 win over Ecclesia (Ark.) on Tuesday night.
JBU (1-0) got off to a slow start in the opening minutes of the first half but was able to open things up to head into the break ahead 43-34.
In the second half, JBU went on a 16-4 run to go ahead 59-38 with 12 minutes left in the game. At the five minute mark, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 72-49 while en route to the 18 point margin.
“In the second half we had to make a few changes defensively because they were trying to spread us out and drive by us,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “After the adjustments we were able to control the flow of the game much better.”
Freshman post Chelsea Garrison led JBU on the night with 16 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Ashley Taylor was next with 15 points and six boards.
For Ecclesia, Ashton Abshier and Tiffany McKenzie scored 22 and 21 points respectively.
Overall, both teams shot 43% from the floor with JBU going 31-73 while EC went 25-58. JBU took the rebounding edge 30-25 while EC forced 19 JBU turnovers while committing 16.
Up next, the ladies travel to Branson, Mo. to compete in the College of the Ozarks Classic. On Friday, the women take on Hannibal LaGrange at 5:30 and then return to face Cardinal Stritch on Saturday at 1 p.m.
