Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 3, 2009) - Sophomore Ashley Taylor’s (Bergman, Ark.) career high 27 points and 12 rebounds helped propel the John Brown University Lady Golden Eagles to a 65-52 win over the NAIA’s 12th ranked Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles on Saturday night in Murray Sells.
Taylor went 8-of-17 from the floor, including 10-of13 from the charity stripe to lead JBU. This was Taylor’s fourth double-double for the year. Junior Micaela Cully (Mountain Home, Ark.) also had a nice game for the Lady Golden Eagles finishing with 12 after going 4-of-8 including 3-of-6 from downtown.
After taking a nine point, 31-22, lead into the locker rooms, JBU (8-5, 2-3) allowed OC (10-4, 3-1) to come within five in the opening minutes of the second half. But with 15:40 remaining JBU pushed it back to a ten point, 36-26, game after junior Lenece Glossett (Edmond, Okla.) banged a three to extend the JBU lead. Glossett finished with five.
OC wouldn’t go away, however, cutting it down to a one-point, 38-37, JBU lead after going on a 11-3 run with 13:00 minutes remaining in the game. The Eagles stayed within striking distance and was able to take their first lead of the game with 5:12 left after Haley Meyers converted two from the charity stripe to give OC the 47-46 lead.
JBU didn’t get rattled and managed to reclaim the lead after Cully drained her third three of the game on the next possession for a 49-47 JBU lead. And at 2:21, Taylor helped JBU push the lead back to seven, 56-49, when she hit a deep three from the top of the key to catapult a 15-5 JBU run to close out the game handing Oklahoma Christian their first loss in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Overall, JBU finished shooting 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) for the game while holding OC to 16-of-52 (30.8 percent). JBU also took the rebounding edge 49-29 with 18 coming on the offensive end.
Up next, JBU heads to Northwestern Okla. State to take on the Lady Rangers on Monday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
