JBU says goodbye to seniors, wins final home game
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 26, 2009) — The John Brown University men’s basketball team closed their regular season home schedule with a 71-50 thumping of St. Gregory’s (Okla.) on Senior Night in Murray Sells. With the win JBU moves to 21-8 overall and sits tied for third in the SAC at 14-7.
Senior Jarrett McGriff ruled the night after putting up 15 points and grabbing 16 boards for a new career high in that category. Wes Brown added 14 points and six boards while freshman Abel Galliguez also finished with 14, and rounding out the double digit scoring was sixth man Andrius Mikutis, who finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Jade Carter tallied 14 points and eight boards to lead SGU (2-25, 1-20).
JBU set the tone early the first half and took a commanding 36-20 lead behind nine first half points from Galliguez. In the second half, JBU led by as many as 18, 46-28, after McGriff tipped in his own miss with 12:40 left in the game. At the 4:39 mark, SGU was able to climb back within nine, 55-46, after Alex Moorehead capped off an 18-9 run. The Golden Eagles immediately responded, closing out the game on a 16-4 to put away SGU for good.
On the night, JBU hit 37.5% (24-64) from the floor and only 30% (7-23) from the perimeter. JBU won the rebounding battle 54-37.
SGU, meanwhile, only managed 27% (17-62) shooting on the night. JBU closes out the regular season on the road when they travel to No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist to face the Bison on Saturday at 8 p.m.
