Shawnee, Okla. (February 28, 2009) — The John Brown University men’s basketball team gave up a 91-74 decision against No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday night in the Noble Complex. With the loss, JBU closes out the regular season at 21-9 overall and 14-8 in the SAC and heads into the conference tournament with a fifth seed.

Davaughn Jackson led JBU with 16 points and eight boards. Jarrett McGriff finished with 13 points and seven rebounds and three assists, and Adrian Miller added 10.

Justin Williams had a game high 24 points seven rebounds and five assists for OBU (27-3, 20-2).

JBU jumped out early on the Bison taking a 17-6 lead at the 12:38 mark, but OBU fought their way back and tied things up at 22 with 7:53 left in the first half.

Both teams traded baskets and the lead over the next few possessions, but the Bison were able to pull away just before half and hold onto a 42-35 lead heading in the locker rooms.

JBU opened the second half strong and Jackson helped the Golden Eagles pull within two, 44-42, at the 17:00 mark.

OBU responded and went ahead by 12, 57-45, after Williams capped off a 13-3 run with a trey with 13:32 remaining in the game.

At 9:02 a pair of Nate Brumfield free-throws put JBU down 16, 69-53, but the Golden Eagles stormed back behind the play of McGriff cutting it down to a four point game, 71-67, at the 5:53 mark.

However, the Bison proved to be too much down the stretch as they slowly pulled away to take home the 17 point win.

“Anyone watching the game tonight knows this wasn’t a seventeen point game,” said JBU head coach Clark Sheehy.” I’m not walking out of here disappointed because our guys played hard and fought and did everything we asked them to do.”

JBU finished shooting 43% (28-65) on the night, but allowed OBU to hit 55.4% (31-56) from the floor including 62% (8-13) from the perimeter. JBU won the rebounding battle 35-34.

With the fifth seed, JBU heads into the SAC tournament facing the number twelve seed, St. Gregory’s on Tuesday, Mar. 3 in Lubbock, Texas.
