Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 6, 2009) — The John Brown University Speech and Debate team capped off another successful year at the Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Tournament, held on the campus of Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana. Sixty-seven public and private universities from around the United States met to compete. The JBU team was awarded an Excellent Overall Team award in debate, earned by placing in the top 10 schools at the competition. Leading the way was senior Josh Sooter, who advanced all the way to semi-finals in individual public debate out of a pool of 42 contestants. “I was thrilled for Josh,” said coach Jason Hough. “He has worked hard for four years and it paid off.” Teammate senior Rissa Murphy was recognized for Excellence in Legislation in Legislative Debate and was also elected as the Presiding Officer of the legislative chamber, receiving with it a special award. Not advancing out of pool competition but earning wins and points for the team in debate were freshman Brandon Knight; sophomores Scarlett Bush, Daniel Fischer, Mikey Kerby and Amber Wilson; and senior Matt Mellema.
