Siloam Springs, Ark (September 15, 2000) - John Brown University is pleased to announce three new Dean appointments.
The appointees are highly esteemed members of the JBU faculty and administration, who offer many talents to their new positions.
Dr. Doyle Butts, member of the Division of Business and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, has been promoted to Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Butts will oversee student retention, academic advising, faculty development, faculty evaluations, institutional research, academic assistance, and student disabilities.
“My goal remains the same,” said Dr. Butts, “I am here to help make JBU the best possible place for students to gain a God-honoring education. My ultimate responsibility is to serve Christ by serving others.”
Dr. Shirley Forbes Thomas was promoted to Dean of Core Curriculum. While continuing to hold the positions of Distinguished Professor of English and director of the Honors Scholars Program, Dr. Thomas will also direct JBU’s core curriculum program.
“I hope to assist my colleagues in taking an already fine program and making it an even greater force for liberal arts education,” said Dr. Thomas.
Dr. Richard Ellis assumes the position of Dean of Adult and Continuing Education. Ellis will continue to lead JBU’s Advance Program, a degree-completion program. He also directs JBU’s online course offerings (JBUOnline.org) and continuing education programs.
“Developing JBU’s distance education courses and expanding the continuing education program, will be my main responsibilities,” said Dr. Ellis. John Brown University presently offers six online courses: Old Testament Survey,
English II, Western Civilization, Introduction to Psychology, Mass Culture/Mass Media, and Arkansas History. Credit and non-credit continuing education courses will be offered in association with other units of the University such as the Soderquist Center for Leadership and Ethics, the Center for Marriage and Family Studies, and the Division of Teacher Education.
