Eagles upset by NWOSU
Alva, Okla. (January 2, 2010) — The 23rd ranked John Brown University men’s basketball team fell by 11, 90-79, to Northwestern Okla. State on Saturday night in Alva. The defeat gives the men only their second scratch in the loss column standing at 11-2 overall and 3-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Four players reached double digits for JBU. Sophomores Adrian Miller and Abel Galliguez both finished with 16 points. Juniors Andrius Mikutis and Sam Bartlett added 13 and 12 respectively, and senior big man Davaughn Jackson tossed in a double-double after finishing with 10 points and 11 boards.
NWOSU (7-5, 2-3) also had a well balanced scoring attack with five players finishing in the double-digit column led by Marshall Bell’s 20.
JBU held a one-point, 36-35, lead after Bell hit a half court buzzer beater heading into the break.
In the second half, the Eagles lengthened their margin by 10 with 13 minutes left in the game, but a strong NWOSU defensive effort over the next nine minutes allowed the Rangers to force turnovers and limit JBU’s offense.
With less than four minutes remaining, JBU lost the lead and couldn’t regroup down the stretch.
Overall, JBU shot 50 percent (27-54) from the floor. NWOSU, meanwhile, hit 43 percent of their attempts which included going 11-of-26 from deep. JBU was outrebounded 38-35, and committed 17 turnovers while forcing only eight.
Up next, JBU returns home to face No. 4 Oklahoma Christian on Monday at 8 p.m. OC is currently undefeated on the year boasting a 13-0 record.
