Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 23, 2010) - The sixth ranked Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene sneaked by John Brown’s men on Saturday night in Murray Sells defeating the Golden Eagles 73-67 in Sooner Athletic Conference action.
JBU dropped to 14-6 overall and are an even 6-6 in conference. SNU improved to 16-4 and 11-1 in the SAC.
JBU’s Davaughn Jackson topped all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds on the night. Junior Ryland Allen was the only other JBU player in double digits with 12 off the bench.
A.J. Thomas dropped in 20 for SNU, while Xavier Alexander added 19.
JBU held a 35-24 halftime lead but came out slow in the second half scoring only five points in the first nine minutes of the period. Meanwhile, SNU slowly chipped away at the margin and managed to take their first lead since early in the game with 12:00 minutes remaining.
With 9:14 left, Thomas drained a three to give SNU 52-45 lead. But Jackson ignited a 9-0 run after scoring on the next possession to help JBU regain the 54-52 lead with 7:19 remaining.
After several lead changes over the next few possessions, SNU’s Vladimir Bulut buried a trey to put SNU back ahead by one, 59-58 with 5:04 left. Coleson Rakestraw answered on the other end for JBU, but another SNU three by Jon West courtesy of Thomas gave SNU the final lead change of the game.
SNU took care of things in the final three minutes as the Golden Eagles couldn’t get over the hump.
For the game, JBU shot 49 percent (24-49) from the floor while SNU shot 54 percent (23-43). SNU outrebounded JBU 26-22, but JBU won the turnover ratio 15-16.
Up next, the men travel to Texas to take on Wayland Baptist on Thursday at 8 p.m. and Lubbock Christian on Saturday at 3 p.m.
