Women unable to hold off OCU
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 4, 2010) — The JBU women’s team fell to 7-16 overall and 3-12 in the Sooner Athletic Conference after falling 69-63 to No. 7 Oklahoma City on Thursday night in Murray Sells.
Sophomore Chelsea Garrison scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards for JBU. Katie Mangels tossed in 15 points and had eight rebounds.
For OCU (17-3, 12-1), Donica Cosby tallied 21 points followed by Holly Hardin with 15.
JBU come out strong and pulled away to a 25-14 lead in the first half before heading into the break ahead by five, 30-25.
In the second period, the ladies come out sluggish and allowed the Stars to close the gap and take their first lead at 38-37 since leading early in the game. JBU quickly regained the lead for a moment after Jessica Berlin converted a three point play to make it 40-38 JBU. But Chontaye Walter gave OCU the lead for good after canning a three-pointer on their next trip up the floor with 12:18 left.
JBU had a late run and made it a one point game with 5:08 left, but OCU managed to pull away down the stretch before taking the six point win.
JBU shot 41% from the floor while holding OCU to 39% for the game. JBU continued to struggle taking care of the ball turning it over 28 times compared to 19 from OCU.
