Women's Basketball Preview
Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 9, 2010) — The Lady Golden Eagles return to SAC action this week beginning with St. Gregory’s (Okla.) on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Shawnee. The team returns home on Saturday to face No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. in Murray Sells.
ABOUT THE LADY GOLDEN EAGLES: JBU enters this week’s contests at 8-16 overall and 4-12 in the SAC. Ashley Taylor, a 5-10 junior from Bergman, Ark. is the team’s leading scorer at 12.5 ppg. Six-two sophomore Chelsea Garrison of Springdale leads in the rebound column with 7.7 rebounds per game. The ladies come into the week with a win as they snapped their eight game losing streak by defeating Mid-America Christian on the road on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles lost to both SGU and OBU earlier in the season. They fell 76-73 to the Lady Cavs and home and lost a 66-62 heartbreaker to OBU on the road.
The Lady Golden Eagles were picked to finish eighth in the SAC’s preseason coaches’ poll and currently hold the 10th spot.
ABOUT THE SGU LADY CAVALIERS: St. Gregory’s currently sits at 8-14 overall and 3-11 in conference play. They finished last week 0-2 after losing to Lubbock Christian (Texas) and Wayland Baptist. Lady Cavs are led in scoring by 5-10 freshman forward Leticia Silva Hernandez of Whitesboro, Okla. 13.38 ppg. Jalisa Howard leads in the rebounding column with 6.1 rpg. SGU was picked to finish last in the preseason SAC coaches’ poll, but are currently one spot below JBU at number 11.
ABOUT THE OBU LADY BISON: As the No. 4 team in the country, the Lady Bison tout a 20-2 overall record and 13-1 SAC record. The Lady Bison are coming off three big wins last week over Oklahoma Christian, Wayland Baptist, and Lubbock Christian. Leading scorer for the Lady Bison is Taujhnae Travis with 16.82 ppg. As a team, they average 68.73 ppg while holding opponents to 56.55 ppg. They are currently sixth in the NAIA in defensive field goal percentage (34.2%).
The Bison claimed the SAC Championship last season and were the preseason favorites heading into this season based on the SAC’s preseason coaches’ poll. They are currently half a game behind Oklahoma City (14-1) in the SAC standings.
