Women's soccer falls in SAC Championship, gearing up for Nationals
Oklahoma City (November 13, 2010) — The JBU women’s soccer team couldn’t find that magic touch on Saturday afternoon as they succumbed to 15th ranked Oklahoma City 2-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship match. The loss puts the ladies at 15-4-1.
The ladies now look ahead to the NAIA National Tournament since they received an automatic bid after making it to the SAC Championship match against OCU. OCU also received an automatic bid to the national tournament for winning the regular season SAC title as well as the SAC tournament championship.
OCU (19-2) began the scoring affair at the 14:57 mark when Meghan McMahon put away the assist from Malin Anderson for the 1-0 lead. JBU quickly responded less than two minutes later when Jodi Knack scored off a penalty kick with 16:47 gone in the first period. The score remained tied at halftime.
In the second period, Anderson and McMahon connected once again for a 2-1 OCU lead in the 47th minute. Down but not out, the Eagles continued to fight and came up with the equalizer when Camille Malkiewicz found Knack off the corner kick for the 2-2 balancer. Less than a minute later, OCU’s Alex Miley took advantage of a JBU error and struck for the 3-2 lead with 64:30 on the clock.
JBU continued to fight but came up blank on several opportunities as the Stars where able to hang on to claim the title.
“The girls have worked so hard, and I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish this year,” said head coach Joe Thoma. “We’ve overcome so many hurdles, and I’m just glad to have this opportunity. We would have liked to win this match, but we never gave up and kept fighting till the end. Now we’ve got to get ready for nationals. We’re looking forward to it and are excited to find out who we get to play next.”
The ladies will find out who and where they’ll play during the first round of the national tournament when the bracket is released on Sunday night.
