Ladies Stunned by Lady Chaps
Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 15, 2011) — The 19th ranked JBU women’s basketball team fell to 14-4 on the year after losing 63-52 in a Sooner Athletic Conference battle against Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday afternoon in Bill George.
The loss drops the ladies to 8-2 in conference play. LCU, meanwhile, improves to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in the SAC.
Katie Mangels scored 15 points and had five boards to lead JBU, while Emily Ortiz added eight.
Emily Atkins had a game high 17 points and five boards to lead LCU. Courtney Wilson added 10.
Back to back treys from Mangels gave JBU an early 6-5 lead in the first period, but after a pair of free-throws from LCU’s Brittany Hampton, JBU wouldn’t lead again.
LCU forced 14 first half JBU turnovers to hold a 26-18 cushion heading into the break.
In the second half, JBU cut it to five early, but LCU continued to pressure the ball and force turnovers and made it a 13 point, 38-25, game after a three from Lauren Sparks with 11:56 left.
A three from JBU’s Kortni Kendrick pulled JBU within nine at the 10:37 mark, but that would be as close as JBU would get.
LCU went on to increase their lead to as many as 16 before taking the 11 point win.
For the game, JBU shot 40.8 percent from the floor but struggled to take care of the ball with 23 turnovers on the day. LCU was 38.3 percent for the day and won the rebounding battle 38-34.
Up next, JBU returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) or a 6 p.m. tilt.
