Chelsea Garrison scored a double-double of 19 points and 10 boards in a 52-54 loss to SNU on Saturday.

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 19, 2011) — The JBU women’s basketball team had a chance for the upset against No. 23 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) but came up short falling 52-54 on Saturday afternoon in Bill George Arena.

With the loss, the women fall to 19-8 overall and 13-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  SNU, meanwhile, improves to 23-5 overall and 17-3 in conference play.

Chelsea Garrison once again had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead JBU.  She was followed by Anna Parish’s 12 point and four rebound effort.

For SNU, Sharmeda Johnson finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.  And Abbey Marra tallied a double-double of her own with 14 points and 13 boards.

Despite being down by three at halftime, 24-27, JBU rallied and tied things up early in the second half and to gain some momentum.  With 9:33 remaining in the game, JBU found themselves up by eight, 43-35, after a pair of free-throw makes from Parish.

SNU responded, however, and managed to make it interesting down the stretch after tying things up at 47 after a bucket from Jamie Bottger with 3:30 left to play.

At the 1:16 mark, Garrison gave JBU a one point, 52-51, lead after a scoring in the paint, but SNU quickly scored on the other end to go ahead by two with 40 seconds left.

After an SNU timeout, JBU inbounded the ball and had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Katie Mangels two point attempt came up empty.  Garrison grabbed the offensive board giving JBU another shot at it, but a wide open three point shot from Mangels was halfway down before popping out.  Marra grabbed the board and kicked it out to Logan Martin who got fouled.  Martin made one of two from the foul line to put SNU up by two.

JBU had six seconds to make something happen, but two JBU three-point attempts came up short in the closing seconds as SNU hung on for the win.

Both teams struggled from the floor with JBU shooting 30.8 percent (16-of-52) compared to 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from SNU.  JBU won the rebounding battle 40-38, but committed 19 turnovers while forcing 15.

Up next, the ladies return home on Monday night at 6 p.m. to face St. Gregory’s (Okla.) in their final home game of the year.
