Siloam Springs, Ark. (May 5, 2011) - John Brown University Director of Athletics Robyn Daugherty has been named the Sooner Athletic Conference AD of the Year for her work during the 2010-2011 athletic season.
Daugherty began serving as JBU’s athletics director in 2006, while also leading JBU’s women’s volleyball program. At the end of the 2010 volleyball season, she retired from coaching after spending 20 years at the helm of the Lady Golden Eagle volleyball program to focus on her role as AD.
In this her fifth year as athletics director, Daugherty has devoted much time and effort to move the athletic program forward. Daugherty played an important role in the construction of the new $9.5 million Bill George Arena, which served as the new playing venue for volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball this past season. She also spearheaded the return of men’s and women’s cross country and cheerleading to the sport offerings at JBU.
Daugherty is constantly working with her coaches to ensure facility and equipment upgrades remain a top priority. She also works to ensure that all student-athletes are given the tools needed to excel in the classroom and in competition, which is highlighted by 32 student-athletes receiving JBU Scholar Athlete honors this past year.
Under her leadership, JBU also had two teams, women’s soccer and women’s basketball, earn trips to the national tournaments in their respective sports. Daugherty also had two coaches, Clark Sheehy (SAC men’s basketball) and Joe Thoma (Region VI women’s soccer), earn Coach of the Year awards along with women’s basketball coach, Jeff Soderquist, earning the Coach of Character award for the SAC.
