CRE awarded $724k Grant to Support Marriages
Siloam Springs, Arkansas (October 6, 2011) — The Center for Relationship Enrichment (CRE) at John Brown University was awarded a $724,428 federal grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. The grant award covers the first year of the three-year grant program and will be used to support the research and development of healthy marriages in Northwest Arkansas. CRE is the only Arkansas recipient of this grant.
“Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the nation,” said Dr. Gary Oliver, executive director of CRE. “This grant will allow us to continue to address the needs in our community as well as expand our program’s efforts.”
Along with training marriage mentors, this new grant will allow CRE and NWA Healthy Marriages, a community service of CRE, to offer pre-marital and marriage education as well as marriage and relationship skills programs on topics like communication, conflict management, emotional and relational intelligence, anger management and parenting skills.
“This significant grant is for a very specific focus and will help enhance only part of the much broader ministries of the CRE,” said Dr. Gary Oliver. “A particular focus of this grant is to target families that have received or are receiving Temporary Assistance For Needy Families (TANF) assistance and other low-income and at-risk families and individuals, including high school dropouts, non-custodial and other single parents and veterans.”
Previously, CRE was awarded a $2.7 million federal grant in 2007 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families to support research and development of healthy marriages in Northwest Arkansas.
