Lake View school board un-invited legislators

(September 12, 2003) — (Lake View-AP) -- Arkansas' Legislative Black Caucus is looking for a new location to hold a public forum on education. The Lake View School District withdrew permission for the caucus to use its facilities yesterday. That's the district that sued the state over public education funding and won. The meeting was scheduled for Monday with permission of thedistrict superintendent. But the school board decided to rescind the invitation and notified the caucus by letter. Caucus chairman Senator Henry Wilkins says the group will find an alternative site for its forum. In the letter, Lake View's school board accused the Legislature, judges, governor and the media of "historic disregard" of the tiny, mostly black district. The letter also accused black legislators of ignoring the district since a state Supreme Court decision ordering improvements in public schools.
