Student visa denials hurt U of A language center

(September 19, 2003) — (Fayetteville-AP) -- The English language training center that serves the University of Arkansas is making changes to try to stay in business. Director Vicki Bergman-Lanier says the Spring International Language Center may offer courses online, among other things, to stay afloat amid a sharp drop in international students. The center provides English training to international students before they pursue degrees across the United States. After having an average of 70 students per session during the past six years, the Fayetteville center now has 38. Bergman-Lanier attributes the drop largely to increased visa denials. The center also has added a training program for Mexican teachers, and is looking for more government contracts and community outreach.
